What to do in Barcelona with kids

Barcelona is the ideal tourist destination for families, as it has lots of activities to do and places to visit, as well as plenty of other ideas for making sure kids don’t get bored, including open-air activities and workshops, children’s festivals and museums with special activities.

TIBIDABO FUNFAIR

Perched on the top of Tibidabo, 500 m above sea level, the 100-year-old Tibidabo Funfair combines vintage style with breathtaking views over the city. You’ll find classic and modern rides and shows, including the merry-go-round and aeroplane. The Museum of Toys and Automata is also well worth visiting. Address: Plaça del Tibidabo, 3-4. How to get there: Metro L7 (FGC): Av. Tibidabo + Tranvia Blau or Bus 196 + Funicular del Tibidabo.

COSMOCAIXA SCIENCE MUSEUM

Children nowadays are more and more interested in science and keen to keep up with the latest technological innovations. CosmoCaixa is the ideal place to satisfy their curiosity. In this science museum, physics and chemistry become a series of interactive experiences, including the Geological Wall, the Flooded Forest, the 3D Planetarium, the Fossil Collections… It’s a whole world of fun! CHOCOLATE MUSEUM

All kids love chocolate! The Barcelona Chocolate Museum looks back at the history of chocolate: from cocoa plantations to its arrival in Europe and the myriad forms available today. Not to mention the giant chocolate figures that will leave the whole family agog. There is a whole programme of activities for children and families. It’s worth booking workshops in advance. BARCELONA URBAN FOREST ADVENTURE PARK

If you want to spend a few hours as Tarzan, head over to the urban forest adventure park in Barcelona’s newest district. Aerial runways, rope courses, climbing nets, bungee jumping… There are over 50 activities and 3 different circuits for all ages and abilities. A thrilling place to burn off energy! Animals are always a great hit with kids. Barcelona Zoo is inside the Parc de la Ciutadella and is home to 400 different species, including gorillas, felines, tropical birds and reptiles. Where: Parc de la Ciutadella. How to get there: Metro L4: Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica; L1: Arc de Triomf.

LABYRINTH PARK

The Parc del Laberint d’Horta is an 18th-century Neoclassical garden and the oldest park in the city. Inside there is a small maze of cypress trees straight out of a fairytale. A great way to spend a morning and discover a unique place in Barcelona. Address: Passeig dels Castanyers, 1. How to get there: Metro L3: Mundet.

PARK GÜELL

Park Güell is another great place for the whole family. Fruit of Gaudí’s vivid imagination, it could have been designed for children. Make sure you see the Dragon Staircase, Hall of Columns, Nature Square and Austrian Gardens. How to get there: Bus H6, 32, 24 or 92; Metro L3: Vallcarca.

BLUE NATURAL SCIENCES MUSEUM

The Museu Blau is specially designed for children. You enter through a huge hall of mirrors and 3D projections recreating the Big Bang on a trip back in time. It has a large collection of fossils, rocks, plants and stuffed animals. They also run children’s workshops. Where: Parc del Fòrum. Plaça Leonardo da Vinci, 4-5. AQUARIUM

As well as sharks, the Barcelona Aquarium has over 11,000 sea creatures from all over the world and is a place where young and old alike can explore the ocean depths. Where: Moll d’Espanya del Port Vell. How to get there: Metro L3: Drassanes; L4: Barceloneta.

BARCELONA BEACHES

Barcelona has lots of beaches under 20 minutes from the city centre. Great for summer, they are also enjoyable for taking a walk in winter and seeing the city from a different angle. Barcelona beaches are equipped with all the necessary services and are a great place to have fun with kids.

PORT AVENTURA

Port Aventura isn’t in Barcelona, but if you have time for a day out it’s worth the trip. Port Aventura is the most popular theme park in Spain and is divided into different areas: China, the Far West, Polynesia, the Mediterranean, etc. They all include dance and theatre shows, restaurants, and all manner of rides. Where: Vila-Seca, Tarragona. How to get there: Train R16 (RENFE): Port Aventura.
