What’s on during summer 2012 in Madrid




Although many of the “madrileños” will be on holiday on the beach during these dates, summer in Madrid is far from the ghost town you might imagine. One of the Spanish capital’s secrets is its jam-packed cultural and leisure programme of events, which offers a host of concerts and activities to enable you to enjoy summer in Madrid. Here are a few of them:


PHOTOESPAÑA 2012 –A festival of photography and visual arts, which will be celebrating its 15th birthday with seventy exhibitions spread out all over the city. Rediscover the world from the point of view of artists like Richard Avedon, Chema Madoz, Andy Warhol, Sharon Hayes and Schott Schuman. Where: various places in Madrid. When: from the 6th of June to the 22nd of July. How much: free.

ROCK IN RIO MADRID -One of the most powerful music events in Madrid, where you can watch some of the most popular bands of the current music scene live.  Among the headline acts this year are Maná, Lenny Kravitz, Rihanna, David Guetta, Pitbull, the Red Hot Chili  Peppers and Incubus. When: the 30th of June and from the 5th to 7th of July. Where: Ciudad del Rock (“Rock City” - Arganda del Rey, Madrid). How much: € 69.  

GAY PRIDE 2012 CELEBRATIONS - For a whole week, the gay pride celebrations in Madrid will be lending a touch of colour to the neighbourhood of Chueca with workshops, a hilarious high-heeled race, drag-queen performances and other activities. This year’s concerts will include OBK, Marta Sánchez, Soraya, Bebe and DJ Wally López. The LGBT pride parade 2012 will be on Saturday the 30th of June. Where: different places in Madrid. When: from the 27th of June to the 1st of July. How much: free.

BATALLA NAVAL DE VALLECAS – A fun event to cool off and forget the summer heat. This is awater fight in which participants will get wet from heat to toes with water bombs, pistols and buckets. And after the battle… paella all round! Where: Plaza Vieja de Vallecas. When: 15th of July. How much: participation in the water fight is free. If you fancy tasting the paella, you’ll need to buy a ticket for € 6.



VERANOS DE LA VILLA ("Summers in the City") - This festival is a classic of the summer nights in Madrid. It brings together performances from the disciplines of music, dance, theatre, cinema and flamenco. Some of the participating artists in 2012 include Charlotte Gainsbourg, Diego el Cigala, Julieta Venegas, Erykah Badu, Russian Red, Jethro Tull' Ian Anderson, Estrella Morente and Pink Martini. Where: Teatro Circo Price (C/ Ronda de Atocha, 35), Jardines de Sabatini (C/ Bailén, 9), el Matadero (Paseo de la Chopera, 10), Conde Duque (C/ Conde Duque, 9-11). When: from the 27th of June to the 2nd of September. How much: from € 12 to € 35, depending on the show.

FIESTAS DE LA PALOMA 2012 –The celebrations of the Virgin of the Dove are, together with those of San Isidro, the most traditional of the city. To honour Madrid’s matron, everybody stays up late, especially in the district of La Latina, where the streets are adorned with Chinese lanterns and there’ll be concerts, theatre, traditional music, children’s games, Spanish omelette competitions etc. When: from the 11th to the 15th of August. Where: various parts of Madrid. How much: free.

EDWARD HOPPER – This summer, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum will be putting on an exhibition of one of the greatest realist painters of the 20th Century: American Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967). A complete review of the career of this artist, who influenced numerous contemporary artists and filmmakers. Where: Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Pº del Prado, 8). When: from the 12th of June to the 16th of September. How much: exhibition € 10; museum and exhibition € 14. 

DCode Fest Madrid 2012MULAFEST – This summer, the first international festival of culture and urban trends will be held in Madrid. BMX, skate, motorbike customisation, tattoo conventions, creative workshops, concerts, artistic exhibitions, DJs, dance performances and many other activities which will give an outlet to urban culture. Where: IFEMA, Feria de Madrid. Av. del Partenón. When: from the 11th to the 15th of July. How much: € 15 for a day ticket; € 38 for the whole period; € 50 with parking and bike rally. 

DCODE FEST 2012 – And now already waving the summer off is this open-air festival. In its second edition, leading national and international groups will come together: The Killers, Sigur Rós, The Kooks, Justice, Niños Mutantes, Dorian, Supersubmarina and Kings of Convenience are some of them. Where: Instalaciones Deportivas Universidad Complutense (Av. Complutense, unnumbered). When: 14th and 15th of September. How much: one-day ticket € 55; both days € 80.
