Plaza Mayor I, this week’s Apartment of the Week
Salamanca located on the ancient Roman road, la Via de la Plata, has had an agitated history fought over by Carthaginians and Romans, Moors and Christians, ruled by Visigoths, at times it was reduced to just a handful of residents an unimportant settlement.
It wasn’t until 1102 when a semblance of peace and prosperity came to Salamanca this was followed by what has become the most important event in Salamanca’s history making it what it is today, the granting by Alfonso IX of Leon to the University of Salamanca a Royal Charter in 1218. This single event had more impact on Salamanca than anything else in its history; today the University attracts 30,000 national and international students to Salamanca making it the most important University in Spain.
