Berlin’s Top 5 Currywurst
In today’s post we are talking about sausages, more importantly we are talking about the most important invention to come out of Germany since the VW Beetle, the currywurst! Such a simple idea yet so very delicious, a pork sausage is cut into bite sized pieces and then covered in a curry sauce. Awesome! If you want the best currywurst in Berlin you’ll have to take your pick from these five.
Konnopke Imbiss- A mythical currywurst awaits under the Schönhauser Allee U-Bahn Station. It may look just like any other imbiss (fast food stand) but as you get closer you’ll see a long line of people eagerly awaiting the delivery of a delicious sausage. But sausages aren’t the only thing they handle, you can try a vegetarian currywurst or wrap your lips around a Wiener, Bockwurst , Knacker and even a Schnitzel. Where: Schönhauser Allee 44a
Curry 36- Another heavy hitter on the Berlin currywurst scene. This is an obligatory stop for anyone who likes their German sausage covered in a rich curry flavoured sauce. It is a Berlin institution and has even patented a sauce, “chillup”, which is sure to make your mouth water. Here you can try the classic currywurst, and the vegetarian version of the same as well as Bulette (German meatballs), Knacker ( a crunchy sausage) and the always popular Bockwurst (smoked sausage) and of course a Schnitzel. Witty’s- If you simply can’t get enough German sausage then you’ll nedd to head on over to this fantastic imbiss near the KaDeWe department store. What sets this imbiss apart from other currywurst sellers in Berlin is their commitment to providing only organic wursts. Their thick but wholly organic wurst is absolutely smothered in a rich organic curry sauce and served, all you have to do is pop it in your mouth. At Witty’s they also serve bratwurst, frankfurters and hot chips. Wash down the wurst with a cold organic beer. Where: Wittenbergplatz, 5.
Bier’s Ku’damm 195- Along one of the most exclusive shopping strips in Berlin, Kurfürstendamm . This is the only place in Berlin you can have champagne with your currywurst. Open all night it is the perfect stop if you have a midnight craving for some sausage. It is a bit of a favourite amongst celebrities returning home from a night out. Have your camera at the ready you might just spot the Hoff. Where: Kurfürstendamm, 195.
