Biutiful
Everyone’s really excited about the approaching Oscars, including us. There’s especially a lot of talk about certain films released this year including The Black Swan with Natalie Portman, The King’s Speech with Colin Firth, and Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio all nominated, and deservingly so, for various different awards from this prestigious event, however we would like to touch upon the latest release by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Amores Perros and Babel), Biutiful starring the greatest Spanish actor of his generation, Javier Bardem.
Like many other films before, Biutiful is set in the very photogenic city of Barcelona, demonstrated in more than three decades of movies with films by legendary directors such as Woody Allen, Jim Jarmusch, and Antonioni, which all highlight the architectural beauty and heritage of this stunning city.
The plot
Based in the city suburbs, Biutiful tells the melancholy story of Uxbal played by Bardem, a man from southern Spain who it transpires is suffering from cancer following his neglect to have medical check-ups, leaving him with barely a couple of months to live. He must deal with all this whilst exploiting and helping desperate Chinese and African immigrants who make a living on the streets of Barcelona, and raising his two children on a small income with his apparent psychic gifts allowing him to earn a bit of dubious extra cash. Uxbal must continue his dodging and weaving, and despite what we see of a decent man trying to do his best in the most terrible circumstances, his good intentions don’t help and very little turns out well. All throughout this aptly named film, spectators will observe his struggle and share in his pain, in what we consider most definitely one of Bardem’s greatest performances. Finger’s crossed for at least the Academy Award for best foreign language film.
