What’s on this Christmas in Valencia
Christmas in Spain is usually a very traditional affair, a time of year that you spend with your family, the season for giving, being merry, and a good opportunity to eat lots of good food. And, Valencia is no exception, the streets are beautifully adorned and lit up, the shops ablaze with seasonal lights and decorations, the sweet smell of turron is in the air. This is the perfect place to spend your Christmas if you would like to experience a traditional and pleasant,Christmas whether you are visiting with your family, partner, or friends. Here are some festive activities taking place in Valencia during the Christmas season.
Christmas Markets in Valencia 2013
There are Christmas Markets set up around all over Valencia filled with gifts and decorations. The Christmas Crafts Market in Plaza de Reina has over 30 stalls and is great place to buy souvenirs, stocking fillers and local delicacies. It runs from the 29th of November 2013 to the 8th of January 2014.
Other Christmas markets in Valencia worth visiting are the Mercado de Colon, which usually has puppet shows and children’s concerts at the Mercado Centralyou can find roast chestnuts, christmas treats and other typical Christmas products. The Mercado de Navidad del Cabañal doesn’t open until the beginning of January but it is one of the biggest in Valencia with hundreds of stalls selling gifts, decorations, figurines and food.
New Year and King’s Day in Valencia
New Year’s Eve celebrations are centered around the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, to welcome in the New Year there are fireworks and as is tradition in Spain, twelve grapes are eaten one for every ring of the bell. Kings Day is another fantastic celebration and is when the Three Wise Men arrive bearing gifts. The parade takes place on the 5th of January through the streets of Valencia. During the parade lollies are thrown into the crowds of screaming children who then return home to wait for the following day when they can open their gifts.
Christmas in Valencia with Children
During Christmas in Valencia there are usually concerts, nativity scenes in the street and acrobats. The children and the young at heart will have a great time at Expojove, a fair to enjoy with the family, there are games, rides, workshops and many others all aimed at children. This Christmas, Expojove will be from the 26th of December 2013 to the 4th of January 2014.
