The neighbourhood of las Letras in Madrid
The central neighbourhood of Las Letras in Madrid has adopted throughout its history many of the Spanish literary greats, hence its name. Today it is a bohemian neighbourhood which combines entertainment, shopping and excellent restaurants all in the centre of Madrid.
It is also known as the “axis of Art”, the Prado Museum, Thyssen Museum and the Princess Sofia Art Centre all border this authentic neighbourhood. In the centre of las Letras are Medialab and CaixaForum and the very emblematic Madrid tourist attractions of Madrid de los Austrias, the Plaza Mayor and the Puerta del Sol.
Hidden amongst the quaint pedestrian streets of Las Letras neighbourhood are attractive squares lined with antique buildings the majority of which were built towards the end of the 19th century, like that of Santa Ana square. Entering this neighbourhood is like stepping back in time to the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire, walk amongst the verse of Lope de Vega or Góngora and the prose of Calderón, Cervantes or Quevedo. No stroll of las Letras neighbourhood would be complete without a visit to the House-Museum of Lope de Vega, can you think of a better way to take a break other than in the gardens of the Museum?
Another attraction of Las Letras is the gastronomy; it is one of the better areas to go out for tapas in Madrid, in its authentic coffee shops, relaxing terraces and restaurants you can enjoy exquisite cooking. The Friendly Rentals team in Madrid likes to go to the Taberna del Chato, their reasonably priced tapas are served in glasses and are truly heaven sent. They also have the tapa of the week which costs only 1€ and is advertised on the board as you enter.
