Berlin is an attractive destination for many reasons, and although its not one of the most romantic cities it still has a romantic side. So, if you are in the German capital on Valentine’s Day then here are a few suggestions because although its going to be cold there in February there’s some nice things to do inside where it’s nice and warm.
Valentine’s Day in Berlin
Spa and Wellness Centre in Berlin
There is nothing better than spending some relaxing time with your partner in a nice warm place where the main plan is to take care of your physical wellbeing with water, oils, and massages whilst contemplating the cold outside that is freezing the water, and the whiteness of winter contrasting with the greyness of the sky. Thus, we would like to recommend two different and very special spas. The Arena Badeschiff Berlin, with its winter Badeschiff attracts many who prefer this relaxation method and given that in summer it is located in an open air pool on level with the river, it is even more curious and interesting.
Alternatively, there is the Liquidrom, whose centre piece comprises a darkened dome with its warm saltwater pool and the moonlight that shines through the circular window at its highest point. It couldn’t get more romantic than that.
Restaurants with views and next to the river
If what you fancy is having a very special breakfast or coffee then we would like to recommend the Panoramapunkt that is none other than a tower situated right in the centre of Postdamer Platz 1, and comprising one of the highest buildings in Berlin where you can enjoy a tasty aperitif in their cafeteria whilst admiring one of the best views in the capital.
In keeping with the spectacular views theme, another romantic must is dinner in the Alexander Platz television tower or Fernsehturm as it is known in German given that inside the tower you can enjoy one of the most special meals in Berlin, in its panoramic restaurant. There are some excellent vegetarian, meat and fish dishes available accompanied by some excellent wines or champagnes which you can enjoy whilst admiring Berlin at night, lit up in all its glory.
Winter may not appear so attractive but with the warm and dim lights gracing the bar, the Freischwimmer Restaurant located on the banks of the Flutgraben is definitely worth a mention. Serving simple but tasty international food, you will love the views on offer from this restaurant most probably for the peace and tranquillity that reigns from being situated next to the river.
Tea and coffee
How do you fancy having some Chinese style tea in one of the most beautiful gardens in Berlin? We are referring to the vast Gardens of the World extending over 20 hectares and which host a unique collection of Bali, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Near East style gardens. There you can immerse yourself in a delicate tea ceremony in the oriental style installations.
One of the most different places we could find in the bohemian district of Prenzlauer Berg was the Anna Blume Café. The name of the café was taken from a poem by Kurz Schwitters, and couples can try delicious coffee, homemade cakes, and baked goods prepared in a unique environment given that this café was previously a florist. The style and floral decoration has been preserved, as well as the shop where you can buy the most beautiful bunch of flowers whilst you try some of the excellent specialties on offer in the café such as crepes, milk shakes, full breakfasts, and a full range of sweets and baked goods that will make this one of the sweetest and most romantic experiences during your stay in Berlin.
A drive around the city
If you would like a drive around the city, then we suggest that it would be more fun to do so in a Trabi, a budget car that was previously used by the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany. They are now almost obsolete, however during the communist dictatorship this was almost the only form of private transport in Berlin, and to get one people had to put themselves on a 10 year waiting list! It is now possible to discover Berlin aboard one of these relics which they stopped making in 1991 thanks to the Trabi-Safari. This certainly promises to be fun as well as romantic.
