Photography in Berlin this 2010
The European month of photography takes place every two years and moves around the German states. This year Berlin has picked the lucky straw and will thus be hosting this fabulous event from the 15th of October to the 28th of November, which certainly promises to be a feast for the eye.
This year they are set to celebrate the 4th edition of this event mid October to nicely kick off Berlin’s cultural autumn and ´Modern Times, New Pictures` is to be the mandatory set theme for all participating institutions who can interpret it however they wish focusing on photography as an ´instrument of modernisation.` Thus, during the festival, galleries, museums and cultural institutions in the host city will be presenting photography-related exhibitions, events and workshops based around this theme. The organisers believe that photographs do more than just ‘reproduce reality’ and that what the camera registers, and the way in which the result is reproduced, is rather a matter of interpretation and so can be seen as the creation of new and additional realities. Some of Berlin’s leading institutions have put forward their own ideas and will be displayed in the event under historic and more importantly contemporary samples of the art.
As a result there will be more than 150 exhibitions and 500 international photographers taking part, with over 10,000 images, and an abundance of photography-related show and workshops taking place over 6 weeks and in various locations of the city. According to the organisers visitors should expect to find pictures that range from surprising and disturbing to controversial and breathtaking. Many of the exhibitions should be free to attend but it is advised that you check the prices for individual galleries.
So if you’re a photography fan and a contemporary art fanatic then this is an event for you, if you’re lucky enough to be in Berlin this October to November.
