Explore the Wonders of Science at CosmoCaixa in Barcelona
If you are on holiday with the kids in Barcelona then a trip to a museum may not be their favourite way of spending an afternoon. The desire to dispel this common myth that museums are boring may be part of the reason that the science museum in Barcelona choose to re-brand itself as CosmoCaixa back in 2005.
Today CosmoCaixa isn’t a museum at all in the traditional sense of lots exhibits in glass cases with little cards attached explain what you can see in the case. CosmoCaixa features interactive exhibits that will hold the attention of both children and adults. There are science experiments that kids can try out for themselves by touching holding twisting and generally getting involved. Your children will come away from CosmoCaixa with the belief that science really can be fun.
What can you find at CosmoCaixa?
CosmoCaixa contains a variety of different sections each with their own unique character. In addition to the interactive science exhibits children will love the flooded forest area. There is the real feel of an Amazonian rainforest having been transported to Barcelona. You can witness huge fish swimming around there are also plenty of snakes reptiles and other forest dwellers to admire. What makes the flooded forest experience particularly realistic is that it rains regularly so visitors get to experience the rainforest world in both rain and sun and see how the inhabitants of the forest react in each situation.
Other areas of the museum include the Geological Wall featuring sample geological formations from Catalonia and the wider world. There is also the Hall of Matter which charts the birth of the universe and civilisation from earliest times.
Sections of the museum that will appeal particularly to families with young children include Click & Flash which uses games to help children learn about science and Touch touch where the museum staff showcase animals and plants from different environments to the public.
CosmoCaixa also boasts a fine bubble planetarium where parents and in particular children can leave this world behind and escape into the rest of the solar system for a while.
Everything at the museum works together to bring science to life and to inspire both young and old with a new admiration for the natural world.
