International Sand Sculpture Festival 2016
When walking along the beaches in the Algarve, it’s not unusual to come across the occasional sand sculpture. The majority is really nice and well done, however they are nothing in comparison to those that you can see at FIESA, the best sand sculpture exhibition in the world.
The International Sand Sculpture Festival counts on the participation of more than 50 talented artists from across the world, creating sculptures that achieve a surprising level of detail and perfection.
The festival, organised by Prosandart, was first celebrated in 2003 in the town of Pêra, situated a few kilometres away from the fabulous Armaçao beach. It has successfully taken place every summer since then.
Each edition has a different theme. This year the theme of the International Sand Sculpture Festival will be music. Expect to see the musical idols of today and yesterday including Amy Winehouse, Pavarotti, Lady Gaga, Sid Vivious and U2’s Bono and some others you wouldn’t normally expect to see.
To create these mammoth sized works of art (some reaching 12 metres tall), more than 40,000 tons of sand have been used. You can visit the sculptures during the day in all their glory and fine details, as well as at night when they are all lit up and the live music shows create a magical environment.
FIESA also offers a creative space where children and adults can receive classes and learn to work with sand. Of course, there are also areas in the shade where you can relax and have a drink.
Up until the end of August, visitors will be able vote for their favourite sand sculpture. Don’t forget to say which sculpture you like the best!
