Frida Kahlo, retrospective in Berlin 2010

Frida Kahlo Retrospective Berlin

The biggest retrospective of Frida Kahlo ever seen in Europe is currently exhibited in the Berlin museum of Martin-Gropius-Bau. This exhibition shows more than 150 paintings and drawings from 45 different private collections from all around the world, including the two most important, from Dolores Olmedo and from Jacques and Natasha Geldman, both Mexican.

“Frida Kahlo, retrospective” will be opened till the 6th August and intends to dive into the artist’s life, plunging into her world of affliction, both physical and emotional; as a consequence not only of the accident that let her bedridden, but because of the stormy relation she had with the muralist Diego Rivera.

In addition to the paintings and drawings, the exhibition will be completed with a series of pictures belonging to her family and friends and which offer an unusual insight into her time and exhibited in cooperation with the National Institute of Fine Arts of Mexico.

Frida Kahlo is one the most important exponents of the Latin American art of the 20th Century and her inner world will be represented in this exhibition through her paintings, pictures of friends and relatives, colourful still-lives, mythical creatures and Aztec gods.

However, the most expected works are her extremely well-known portraits depicting the Mexican artist’s imaginary and that shows her injured by thorns, in exotic places or with her lover Rivera drawn on her forehead.

In addition to that, parallel to this exhibition and in order to celebrate the wonderful relation between Mexico and Germany, the Ibero-American Institute (IAI) will organize a series of speeches focused on Fride Kahlo and tackling with questions such as the artistic relations between Mexico and Germany, the artist’s paintings and her connexion with surrealism.
