It thus comes as no surprise that it is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal. However, the region is also famous for being the leading golf destination in Europe thanks to its excellent climate and rich, green terrain making it perfect for practising this relaxing sport all year round. There is more than 30 golf courses distributed along its beautiful coasts alone so golfers seeking a pleasant little winter getaway will find themselves spoilt for choice. VALE DO LOBO
The Vale do Lobo golf course comprises one of the best in Portugal after having been ranked 3rd in the Golf Digest Magazine, and the largest luxury resort in the Algarve. It is divided into two layouts, the Royal and the Ocean and features gentle undulating ground lined with umbrella pines. Golfers are also treated with stunning mountain scenery and ocean views whilst they play. Course specifications: 18-hole, Par 73 Ocean Course and 18-hole, Par 72 Royal Course.
QUINTA DA RIA
Rated one of the top 10 golf courses in Portugal it comprises a relatively flat parkland course featuring lakes, numerous bunker and trees, etc. set within the famous Ria Formosa Nature Reserve for some spectacular views of the mountains and sea. Course specifications: Traditional 18-hole, Par 71 course extending over 6,016 metres from the back tees.
ONYRIA PALMARES
Overlooking the charming old town and Lagos Bay, this golf course blends well into the surrounding environment. It features flowering plants and shrubs and occupies the more hilly terrain of Palmares where golfers can contemplate some beautiful scenery whilst perfecting their putting techniques. Course specifications: Three returning 9-hole loops, Alvor, Lagos and Praia.
BOAVISTA GOLF
Opened in January 2002, this premier golf course measures 6,053 metres and offers stunning views of the Atlantic. It has a brilliant layout integrated well into the natural surroundings and features olive and fig trees, as well as various water obstacles.Course specifications: 18-hole, Par 71 championship course divided into two distinct areas, the Resort section and Country Section.
LE MÉRIDIEN PENINA GOLF RESORT
This comprises the oldest golf course in Portugal. It was built back in 1966 by Sir Henry Cotton and boasts nearly 400,000 trees and shrubs, as well as natural streams and lakes for a wonderful wooded feel. Course specifications: Traditional design with two loops of 9 holes, and a par 73 with only one par five on the front nine holes and four on the back nine.
