Lisbon Winter Festival
The charming city of Lisbon is just a melting pot of culture, and the Christmas events on offer this festive season are particularly elaborate with all the beautiful lights and decorations, as well as their Christmas tree of record breaking height, not to mention the festive and fabulous Gifts and Craft trade show, and finally their New Year’s Eve celebrations which promise to be spectacular with the firework displays, concerts and performances, amongst many other events organised for seeing in the New Year. And, that’s not all as the Portuguese capital will be continuing to entertain the locals and visitors alike with its Winter Festival of art and culture that the city will be hosting from the 6th to the 31st of January 2011.
Lisbon’s Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is organiser of this exciting event that takes place on an annual basis, and which comprises a pleasant follow up to the lively Christmas celebrations taking place during the festive season in the Portuguese capital. Entertainment includes Arabic songs, Berlin cabaret, and a rarely heard opera by Janácek, a Czech composer. In addition, a multimedia installation allows spectators to experience what its like to be in a symphony orchestra.
The Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir both feature in the programme along with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and invited vocal and instrumental soloists.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a charitable foundation with cultural, educational, social, and scientific interests. The aim of this organisation is to bring cultures and nationalities together, the Winter Festival being a perfect example of the work they carry out. This event will thus be the perfect opportunity to discover Portuguese culture as well as learn about others.
We thus recommend that you head down to the activities on offer if you’re in Lisbon this winter season as it promises to be an entertaining and interesting event.
