With the gastronomic wealth that characterises the Costa Brava, and given its various seas and its fertile land, we can safely say that the food of this Catalan region is immensely varied, diverse, and of course exquisite. On top of that it is a natural area of extreme beauty which makes this a top culinary destination. Furthermore, given that the Costa Brava has an endless number of coastal or inland towns, each one with its own personality and beauty, we would like to suggest a couple of restaurants that we assure you will be a unique culinary experience.
El Bulli – Cala Montjoi in Rosas
It is of course unnecessary to formally introduce you to the El Bulli, the extremely well-known and prestigious restaurant belonging to Ferran Adria, situated on the Cala Montjoi in Rosas. We are referring to a very distinguished restaurant which has received three Michelin stars, and has been dubbed one of the best restaurants in the world on several occasions since it opened. The owner Ferran Adria, to whom the restaurant owes its success, is considered one of the most famous and top chefs on the international culinary scene, and part of his success has been the introduction of new techniques, such as reconstruction, which comprises isolating the ingredients from a typical dish to then rebuild it in an unusual way.
He also focuses on molecular gastronomy (physical and chemical process that occurs while cooking). The restaurant is located in an old country house approximately 200km away from Barcelona, opens only six months a year, and the average price of the menu per person is some 300 euros. We recognise that this is not within everybody’s budget, however, we don’t even need to tell you that this would be a treat rivalled by any other, and it promises to be a once in a lifetime experience. They are currently closed for the season and will not be opening again until 2014, although even then it will be more of a study workshop in advanced culinary skills where they will be serving the occasional dishes. We hope however that they open soon as a restaurant so that you don’t miss out on the opportunity to enjoy food of this quality in a unique location in the Cala Montjoi, on the Costa Brava.
Celler de la Puntaire – Blanes
We now exit this avant-garde kitchen that characterises the Bulli to move onto the Catalan town and coast of Blanes where the Celler de la Puntaire is to be found. This restaurant has a completely different style to that of the Bulli, which doesn’t make it the least less recommendable. We refer to the fact that this restaurant serves natural and traditional food with ingredients from the land and the very same coasts where the restaurant is located. Diners are absolutely ecstatic with the quality of the wine, meat, fish, and vegetables on offer as the owners carefully select the products used in the dishes, and really care about the customer service which the owner himself and his wife personally provide. It is a cosy, and pleasantly decorated restaurant, where they really care about the quality of the products on offer, down from the natural products they use to the customer service provided. Truly a culinary experience n the Costa Brava.
6,9 – Tossa de Mar
Finally, why not try a modern menu of excellent quality at a very reasonable price? You will find all this and more in Restaurant 6,9, situated in the town of Tossa del Mar. With a wide and varied menu based on traditional dishes with a modern touch, you can try some excellent salads, meat, and fish, as well as their excellent deserts for a really reasonable price. Because good food doesn’t always have to come at a price as demonstrated by this restaurant as if all the locals are going there, then it’s a good sign. Restaurant 6,9 is a definite stop-off on your culinary ramble around the Mediterranean, when it comes to quality, price, and a young, lively atmosphere.
