Like every Monday, we want to contribute to get to know a bit more about the music that characterizes and reflects the personality of a Friendly city or country. And this week we have directed our attention to Portugal. The music scene in this country is not only based on its most international expression, the fado, but on a wider mix of styles, represented by many Portuguese bands playing different styles.
The fado is about melancholy, longing, frustration and fatalism. It is crystallized through a single voice accompanied by the viola, which is the Portuguese guitar, being the maximum exponent, the very well-known singer Amalia Rodrigues. Of course, there is a song from this great Portuguese singer in our Playlist Sounds of Portugal, and in our desire to accurately reflect the music rooted in the popular scene, we have included as well singers and bands such as Mariza, Orquestra or Flor de Lis.
However, the music diversity is very well extended and reflected in bands with different music styles, such as pop-rock. Therefore, in our Playlist there are bands such as Toronja, Wraygunn, Raio Macau, Mundo Cao, Cla, X-Wife, Bunnyrach, Rita Redshoes, and of course David Fonseca, the highest representative of the new wave of Portuguese bands and singers.
As for other musical styles such as hip-hop and electronics our Playlist features bands such as Da Weasel, Blasted Mechanism, Hands on Approach or Buraka Som Sistema and its famous dancey song Kalemba.
All these and many other bands make up our Playlist Sounds of Portugal, our particular collection of the most characteristic and representative sounds from the past, present and future of the music scene in Portugal.
