San Sebastian: Perfect for Kids
San Sebastian or Donosti as it known by the locals has to be the most picturesque Basque city, nestled on the bay of Vizcaya and surrounded by lush rolling hills it is the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are many things to enjoy in San Sebastian such as enjoying the cities various monuments and museums and not forgetting the absolute pleasure of walking the old quarter enjoying Spain’s best pintxos.
Sounds great if you are on a romantic weekend with your partner, but what if you go with the kids? No need to worry, San Sebastian has a plethora of things for kids to do, and to help you along here is a little list of kid friendly activities in San Sebastian.
Aquarium- The Aquarium has to be near the top of any kid’s wish list, more than 100 years old this recently refurbished aquarium allows both kids and adults alike to delve into the oceans depths and see up close the wonders of our oceans including sharks, manta rays and of course no visit to the aquarium would be complete without seeing “Nemo”.
Monte Igueldo-Ask any Donostiarra, San Sebastian local, about a treasured childhood memory and they will tell you the first time they went to Monte Igueldo. An amusement park harking back to yesteryear, this classic family favourite features a roller coaster, dodgem cars, a labyrinth and a haunted house. A great day out for all the family guaranteed.
Eureka! Zientzia Museoa-Science can be fun at the Eureka! Science Museum, travel the Solar System in the Planetarium, make your hair stand on end with electricity, explore forests and the animals that live in them and discover the five senses in the Txikiklik room a space devoted especially to the younger members of the family. For the older member s of the family there is a roller coaster and F1 simulator to enjoy.
Txuri Urdin Ice-Rink-A great place to spend a rainy day, the kids can skate to the beat of the latest tunes or watch a local ice hockey match. All equipment is available for hire at the ice-rink. There is also a child minding service offering various activities for the children.
If these activities aren’t enough to keep the kids amused don’t worry, San Sebastian is blessed with several great beaches, including the much photographed Playa de la Concha, so just pack a towel and head down to the beach. Another option is to head down to one of the well equipped local parks or skate parks where the children can run wild.
The old quarter of San Sebastian, closed to traffic, is perfect to explore with kid, in fact, many local families stay out late with the adults chatting over wine and enjoying pintxos whilst the kids run freely in the streets and squares of the old town.
