Welcome to the world of Secret Cinema, a community of all those that love cinema, an experience, and above all the unknown. The venues are a secret, the audience a secret and well, the film is a secret until the last minute. Technically it’s not that secret anymore because we’ve just let the cat out of the bag but that’s what we do, we like to share.
Secret Cinema’s motto, a monthly screening/theatrical happening in unusual venues is “tell no one” The location remains secret until the last minute, as does the film to be shown. You are transported on a blacked-out double-decker bus to the secret venue and on arrival actors, who improvise to recreate the plotline of the film, greet you on intricate sets.
One of the last films to be screened was Blade Runner and upon arrival, viewers who firstly had no idea where they were, arrived to a chaos of smashed up cars, giant towering storage containers, and a warehouse falling into dystopian ruin all in an impressive attempt by the actors to recreate scenes of the film they were about to see. Participants found themselves in crowded China Town in 2019 Los Angeles, Blade Runner style. The attention to detail by the organisers is unrestrained and the effort put into their costumes and performances by the actors, who really put on a good show, are as equally impressive. And this is all even before you enter the warehouse to see the film! Finally, according to the founder and director of Secret Cinema, “It was inspired by the ambition and brilliance of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner to create a world where the audience could become part of the film. We will continue to challenge the idea of cinema and to push community, creativity and scale to bring the magic back to the film experience”.
It is a secret but to be fair it deserves to be the worlds worst kept secret because it is truly an amazing experience. As it takes place every month you have the opportunity to experience Secret Cinema first hand, so make sure that you sign yourself up for next month’s film if you’re lucky enough to be in London this autumn.
And remember……. tell no one.
