A great way to delve into a city and discover the culture is to visit the local markets. Obviously the highlight of any trip to a local market is to see and buy all kinds of exotic and not so exotic foods and products. More importantly, markets give you the perfect opportunity to do some people watching, where you can hear the local people haggle over the price of some item or discuss the freshness of a piece of fruit and interact with each other. The markets in Lisbon are a great place to go and do some shopping and people watching. So without futher ado, Let’s go shopping!
Feira da Ladra- Otherwise known as the “Theives Market” this Lisbon flea market is thought to have begun in the 12th century. Here you can find almost anything and everything; antiques, clothing, records, coins, books, spread out on tables and sometimes blankets. The market takes place every Tuesday and Sunday from dawn to dusk. Get down there early so as to have plenty of time to wander around. Where: Campo de Santa Clara.
Feira de Antigidades, Velharias e Artesanto de Belém- This Antiques and Craft Market is held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 9am to 6pm in the spectacular surrounds of the Vasco da Gama Gardens. As the name suggest this market in Lisbon sells all kinds of antiques and crafts ranging from furniture to postcards. Best of all this market is close to some of Lisbon’s major tourist attractions. Mercado da Ribeira- Across the road from the "Cais do Sodre" train station in beautiful domed topped building you will find Lisbon’s biggest and cheapest food market. At the River Market you can get everything you need to prepare some excellent Portuguese food in your apartment in Lisbon. Apart from the all the fruit, fish and other foods the market is also famous for selling flowers. The upper levels are dedicated to handicrafts, antiques and dancing. Open everyday except Sunday from 6am to 7pm. Where: Avenida 24 de Julho
Other markets in Lisbon worth visiting are the craft market held the first weekend of every month in Jardim da Estrela and the biological food market held at Principe Real every Saturday from 9am-2pm. Happy bargain hunting!
