Swim with Great White Sharks in Cape Town
Cape Town, the Great White shark capital of the world. In Gansbaai, a region located to the Western side of the Cape, they offer you the chance to take a dip in shark infested waters with their Great White Shark Cage Diving Experience.
Not for the faint hearted, this experience involves climbing into a cage decked out in your scuba or snorkelling gear and admiring these graceful creatures swim towards you baring their sharp teeth.
Great White Sharks are famous for their size as they can reach up to 6 metres in length and have been known to weigh around 5,000 lb. They are one of the world’s largest known existing predatory fish feeding on marine mammals. The Great White Shark is the only known surviving species of its genus and is ranked first in a list of number of recorded attacks on humans.
However, you’ll be glad to know that although the Great White has been portrayed as ferocious man eaters in films such as “Jaws”, humans are not their favourite food.
They live in coastal and offshore waters and the densest population is found around Dyer Island, South Africa where they carry out extensive research on this species. Gansbaai, where they offer this Great White shark diving experience, is one of the world’s best Great White Shark viewing regions so this comprises a great opportunity to come up close to these fearsome creatures.
As the sharks are surface feeders, the shark handlers are trained to bring them to the surface and against the side of the boat with heads and jaws clearly visible for all to see. For those of you who don’t fancy getting up so close and personal, you can stay in the boat and enjoy them from the safety of the deck.
