Guide to the best neighbourhoods to stay in Milan
MILAN CENTRE
The centre of Milan is dominated by the magnificent cathedral, or Duomo, surrounded by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Palazzo Reale and famous Teatro alla Scala opera house. The main tourist sights are concentrated in this district and the surrounding area. This is the best place to stay in Milan if you want to be in the heart of the city and are willing to pay a bit more for the privilege.

BRERA AND THE QUADRILATERO D’ORO
North of the Duomo, bustling, young Brera is full of art galleries, bars and narrow streets. It is famous for the Pinacoteca’s excellent artworks and the Quadrilatero della Moda, where you’ll find exclusive boutiques with clothes designed by Versace, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino. Brera is safe, sophisticated and very central.

NAVIGLI
Southwest of the Duomo is the neighbourhood of canals, Navigli, which borders Ticinese. You’ll find lots of restaurants and bars open till late, making it a good place to stay if you like going out at night or plan to sightsee until late. There are also clothing, antique, craft and food markets. Navigli is safe, fairly central and a bit cheaper than the previous two areas.

PARCO SEMPIONE
North of Brera and the Duomo is Parco Sempione, including the Castello Sforzesco, home to an art gallery containing masterpieces of Italian art, and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where you can see Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting The Last Supper. Parco Sempione is a good area for families to stay in Milan. It is lovely and quiet and children love playing in the park. In addition, Cadorna railway station runs directly to Malpensa airport.

Another good area to stay in Milan is the Porta Garibaldi district, home to the city’s Central Station. This is the best area to stay if you want to save money. You can take a train from Central Station to Linate airport, as well as go on excursions in the area around the city. In addition to the Art Nouveau railway station, you’ll also find the 16-hectare Giardini Pubblici park and the modern Piazza Gae Aulenti, the heart of the city’s financial district.
