Sun, sea and sand on the outskirts of Barcelona
Barcelona has many beaches where you can go for a dip to beat the summer heat. However, throughout the months of July and August, when it get’s really hot, it’s not unusual for the beaches to get really full, therefore you might prefer to search for another place to go sunbathing or for a refreshing swim in the sea, that isn’t quite as busy.
If this is the case then your best option is to get on the train and go to the one of the great beaches located near the city. Below are some that we particularly recommend:
Masnou – measuring more than a kilometre long and 60 metres wide, Ocata beach is very large and can host a good number of sun-seekers without getting too crowded. It has toilets, showers, rents out hammocks and sunshades, has disabled access, amongst all other kinds of services and has been awarded a blue flag certifying the quality of the beach. Train: Line R1, Ocata
Mataró – We recommend Sant Simó beach that extends all the way to the town of Sant Andreu de Llavaneres. It is a white sand beach that has parking, showers, beach bars and hammocks to rent…there’s a more isolated area along the beach which is great for doing some diving. Train: Line R1, Mataró
Sant Pol de Mar – Also on the coast of Maresme, this small town has several stunning beaches, with coarse golden sand. Morera Beach is particularly lovely, reflected in the blue flag that is has been awarded for its clean and calm waters, as well as Can Villà offering pretty views of the town. Train: Line R1, Sant Pol de Mar.
Castelldefels – If you head towards the south out of Barcelona, you will end up in Costa del Garraf. One of the most well-known beaches in the area is Castelldefels beach. Located only 20 minutes away from Barcelona, it has over 5km of fine sand beaches with shallow waters and gentle tides, making it ideal for children and a pleasant stroll along the seashore. Train: Line R2, Platja de Castelldefels.
Sitges – This pretty little town with typical white houses and narrow streets, as well as a rich architectural heritage, is quite a popular tourist destination. A mere half an hour from Barcelona, it is the perfect place for enjoying the summer to the max. There are 18 beaches in Sitges to choose from, and many of them also offer you the opportunity to practise water sports such as windsurf or sailing. Sant Sebastiá beach, situated between the old town and the sports port, is one of the most popular. Train: Line R2, Sitges.
With all these options, we are sure that as well as being able to bathe in clean waters, you will also be able to get a nice tan, a nice souvenir of you holidays.
