Taking place from the 6th to the 22nd of May this interesting but controversial theatre meeting is part of the Berlin Festival held at the Haus de Berliner Festspiele. Its unconventional programming, which has quite often provoked public controversy, makes Theatertreffen the unique theatre event that it is.
Theatertreffen in Berlin this 2011
During this festival, the most prominent theatre professionals from Germany, as well as journalists, and international guests all gather in Berlin. The centrepiece comprises the ten most remarkable productions which are selected every year by an independent panel of judges from as many as 400 plays presented throughout one season. Running alongside the top German-language theatre is a varied programme of events including public debates, featuring renowned guests from culture, politics, and business. In addition, visitors can attend award ceremonies, discussions with the audience, première parties and concerts.
The Theatertreffen is also a platform for emerging talent and undiscovered theatremakers as it gives them a chance to present their plays and gives them greater visibility. It also offers great opportunities for exchange and networking.
The final selections were made in February and the ten most notable productions announced for this year’s edition of the festival. Eight writers from Poland and Germany feature amongst those chosen from over 350 European playwrights. Visitors don’t need to worry as there are plenty of performances that cross the boundaries of language including physical theatre, dance and performance art.
This promises to be an extremely interesting event, so if you would like to fully take advantage of what the Theatertreffen has to offer then we recommend that you stay in an apartment in Berlin.
