Sobrasada and ensaimada, typical Mallorcan food
There are two very typical food products in Mallorca, sobrasada and ensaimada. If you are planning to visit the island you can’t leave without trying them. You won’t regret it!
Mallorcan sobrasada
Sobrasada is a raw, cured sausage very typical of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. The name comes from the Italian word “sopressa” (mince) and it was already very popular in the 16th century. Sobrasada is traditionally made during pig slaughters which are especially carried out in autumn.
Mallorcan sobrasada is made from ground pork mixed with paprika giving its characteristic red colour, as well as salt, pepper and other spices. As is quite often the case with traditional recipes, each town and family has their own way of making it. Thus, you will find different varieties of sobrasada depending on where you go in Mallorca. It usually comes in a tub like a spread or in the form of a sausage.
Sobrasada has a very intense and characteristic flavour. You can eat it cold or hot, spread on crusty toasted bread. You can also add it to ensaimadas and even include it in your own recipes.
Mallorcan ensaimada
The other very typical product of Mallorca is ensaimada, a pastry product with a good number of fans all over the world.
Ensaimada is in a spiral shape. It is made from dough containing flour, eggs, sugar and pork lard. It is baked and sprinkled with icing sugar.
The more typical Mallorcan Ensaimadas are the flat ones (with no filling) and the cabellos de angel (literally angel’s hair). They also have ensaimadas filled with different kinds of cream, chocolate, etc. We also can’t fail to mention “tallades” (literally sliced) which are traditionally eaten during Carnival celebrations and are covered with sobrasada instead of containing a sweet filling.
The origin of ensaimada is unknown, however it is believed to have Jewish or Arab roots. In the 17th century, it was traditionally made for celebrations and special occasions. Over time, it has became one of the most popular typical products in Mallorca.
The truth is that going on holiday to Mallorca and not trying sobrasada is almost a sin. As well as being absolutely delicious, these typical products of Mallorca are a perfect souvenir that you can take back for your family or friends.
