If you’re planning a trip to Valencia, one place you really must visit is the City of Arts and Sciences (CAC). Keep reading to find out all you need to know.
A site with six main areas
The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia is without a doubt one of the most impressive sites for arts and sciences in Europe. It comprises six distinct areas: Umbracle, Hemisfèric, Museu de les Ciències Príncep Felip, Oceanogràfic, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia and Àgora. If you’ve got enough time, they are all well worth a visit!
Umbracle: A 17,500 m2 open-air sculpture garden with views over all the buildings, ponds, gardens and walkways in the City of Arts and Sciences. Don’t miss the wonderful Astronomy Garden for science buffs! Parking for the City of Arts and Sciences is inside the Umbracle.
Museu de les Ciències Príncep Felip: Make sure you see its interactive exhibitions and scientific animations. A great way of finding out all about new technologies and cutting-edge science. In addition to exhibitions, the museum also runs a comprehensive programme to raise public understanding of science and to encourage visitors to get actively involved under the guidance of monitors.
Oceanogràfic: Take an underwater voyage in the largest aquarium in Europe, home to the main ecosystems on the planet and boasting a range of aquatic environments: Mediterranean, Wetlands, Temperate and Tropical Seas, Oceans, the Antarctic, the Arctic, Islands and the Red Sea. There is also a dolphinarium.
Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia: The ideal space for major musicals, operas and other performing arts shows. A cultural powerhouse that has put Valencia on the world stage, this state-of-the-art space opened in 2005 and is equipped with all the latest technology.
Àgora: A multifunctional space that is ideal for hosing all kinds of events: conferences, conventions, concerts, performances and exhibitions. Its pointed-ellipse metallic structure is 88 metres long and 66 metres wide and covers 4,811 m². Its name reflects its purpose as a covered public square.
Hemisfèric. Without a doubt the most remarkable building on the site. Designed by Santiago Calatrava to represent a human eye, the sphere inside this 100-metre-long building is the largest cinema in Spain, with a 900 m2 screen and three different projection systems: large-format cinema (IMAX Dome), 3D digital cinema and digital screenings.
