Four of the most popular markets in Valencia

Market Shopping in Valencia

No visit to a city is complete without having passed through the local markets, these buildings full of vitality where you can watch the hustle and bustle of daily life, hear the cries of the stall holders peddling their wares, the colours of the fruit and vegetables…and Valencia is no different. These are Valencia’s main markets.

Mercado Central in ValenciaMERCADO CENTRAL
Valencia’s Central Market is one of the city’s finest examples of Modernist architecture. Built in 1914 under the supervision of archirtects Francesc Guardia i Vial and Alexandre Soler i March it occupies a privileged position in the city centre. In the bright and airy interior all kinds of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, spices, nuts and typical local foods are sold. Where: Plaza del Mercado, 6.

Mercado de Colón in ValenciaMERCADO DE COLÓN
Another beautiful modernist building featuring covered and open air areas is the Mercado de Colon. The market designed by Francisco Mora was recently refurbished and since then it has hosted many cultural activities. Butchers, green grocers and fish markets share the space with restaurants, cafes and local craft shops. Where: C/ Jorge Juan, 19.

Mercado Cabañal ValenciaMERCADO DEL CABAÑAL
Located in Valencia’s port area this is another of the city’s best known markets. For more than 50 years it has been selling fresh produce and is especially famous for its seafood. Apparently the best fish in Valencia is bought from the Mercado de Cabañal. In the stalls surrounding the market fresh fruit and vegetables are sold. Where: C/ Marti Grajales, 4.

Mercado de Ruzafa en ValenciaMERCADO DE RUZAFA
Built in 1957 the Mercado de Ruzafa is one of Valencia’s newest markets. Located in the bohemian neighbourhood of L’Eixample what sets this market apart from the rest is how it perfectly combines the activity occurring both inside and outside of the building. Where: Plaza Barón de Cortes.
