Shopping in Bilbao
Spain is a big country. In fact, the way some people look at it, it’s several countries folded into one. One of the least well-explored areas is the Basque Country. Tucked away in the curvature of the Bay of Biscay, when it comes to style powerful cities such as Bilbao have more in common with their French cousins than those from the South. Be elegant, look sharp and make sure you’re impeccably chic at all times. Grab your smartest coat: we’re going shopping in Bilbao.

The Milla de Oro (“Golden Mile”) is designed for those for whom shopping is a way of life rather than a necessity. Shops such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and DKNY show the extent to which the city has transformed itself to become a firm player on the global scene. Locked in around Moyua Square and the Gran Via, come here to feel as though the fashion world is at your feet. Or just enjoy an afternoon’s window-shopping.
The narrow streets of Bilbao’s Casco Viejo (“Old Quarter”) are the perfect hiding place for cute and quirky shops of all kinds. Situated to the right of the river, in the area surrounding the cathedral, come here to find one-of-a-kind accessories and individual pieces if you believe that one size definitely does not fit all. If the shopping in the Golden Mile is strictly off-budget, shops such as Serie B and La Suite showcase younger designers such as local duo Ailanto.
Indautxu, to the left of the c/ Elcano and close to the Guggenheim, is the centre of finance and all things modern in Bilbao. Begin looking around the c/ Ercilla, and spread out to Rodríguez Arias, Máximo Aguirre and Iparraguirre.
You know what they say: “Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” When you do stumble upon the best, most unique places to go shopping in Bilbao, be sure to spread the good cheer by writing in to tell us about them.
