World Book Night to be celebrated in Madrid on the 27th of April

World Book Night in Madrid this 2011

World Book Day is traditionally celebrated on the 23rd of April, however it falls on the same day as Holy Saturday this year so they have decided to change to date to the 27th of April in Madrid. Thus, the 27th of April is the chosen date for World Book Night.

This event is an urban celebration and aims to bring literature closer to everyone. Therefore, it has an extensive programme full of a wide range of activities related to all kinds of artistic disciplines.

Under the motto “If you give me a book, I’ll give you book”, this year’s edition of the event is inviting anyone who wants to come and take part in the activities with more than 450 writers and international artists. In addition, all kinds of institutions, cultural centres, bookshop, libraries and cultural spaces in Madrid will be opening their doors to the public from 9am until 1 in the morning on the 28th of April so everyone can come and see what’s on offer.

Furthermore, for the first time there will be activities taking place prior to the 27th to get people warmed up for the big day and an online platform has even been launched with interactive features where anyone who wishes to do so, may share their experiences and comments with other participants.

Top names such as Ana María Matute, Manuel Rivas, María Dueñas, Boris Izaguirre, Juan Cruz, Mario Gas, Ray Loriga, Mercedes Cebrián and Almudena Grandes, etc are amongst those illustrious authors that will be collaborating in the Madrid World Book Day initiative.

Amongst those activities lined up in the event, there will be a literary gathering in all kinds of institutions such as the Chilean Embassy, cinema screenings with casual talks in institutions such as the Filmoteca Española, and concerts, as well as activities on the streets such as storytelling, poetry recitals, and literature workshops, amongst others. All this and more for a full day of events relating to our most valued element of communication, the written word, and its maximum form of expression, literature.
