History of the Palau de la Música Catalana

The Palau de la Música Catalana was designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the masters of Catalan Modernisme. He also designed the Hospital de Sant Pau.

It was built between 1905 and 1908, having been commissioned by the Orfeó Català and funded by Catalan industrialists and intellectuals of the time. Cutting-edge techniques were used encompassing all the applied arts: forged iron, sculpture, mosaics, stained glass… The result is a unique building full of small details. The Palau de la Música Catalana was designed as an auditorium and concert hall, but over the years it has housed not only musical premieres but also a wide range of cultural, political and theatrical events. It’s been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997.
